Meet Our Trainer
Sparky possesses remarkable talent. His life’s focus has been the study of the profound bond between humans and canines. From a very young age, it was clear that dogs were Sparky’s true passion. His journey into dog training began in Port Townsend, WA, where he apprenticed under a Police K9 trainer. There, Sparky was introduced to Schutzhund (IGP), and at just 11 years old, he became the youngest competitor in Washington State. By age 13, Sparky achieved Schutzhund Level 1 and Tracking Level 3 titles, earning numerous ‘High Tracking’ awards along the way with his German Shepherd.
Sparky later completed the renowned Michael Ellis School for Dog Trainers‘ Long Term Immersion Program, studying under one of the world’s foremost trainers. Today, he is an accomplished Mondioring competitor, having recently secured the 2024 USMRA National Championship at Level 2 with his dog Archie. They are set to compete in the FCI Mondioring World Championship in Greece this October 2024, having also achieved a historic tie for the highest Mondioring Level 2 score in US history with 298/300 points.
Sparky’s exploration of the human-canine connection extends beyond working dogs to include all dog owners and their beloved companions and inspired him to open Sound Canine, dedicated to helping dog owners discover incredible connections with their best friends.
As a child, Joey grew up in a household with a stringent “no pets allowed” policy, fueling his fervent desire for canine companionship. Determined to fill the void, he sought out neighborhood dogs for play and interaction.
Venturing into the demanding realm of the food service industry as an adult, Joey’s irregular and lengthy work hours made dog ownership impractical. Undeterred, he immersed himself in animal welfare by volunteering at local shelters and eagerly accepting opportunities to pet-sit for friends and colleagues.
His professional journey led him through the intricate world of coffee education, where he honed his skills by training numerous baristas for a burgeoning specialty coffee chain. Transitioning to the culinary scene, Joey traversed kitchens in bustling metropolises like New York, Los Angeles, Rome, and even China. Despite his globe-trotting adventures, he often quipped about his lifelong aspiration: to carve out enough free time for a faithful canine companion.
Finally realizing his dream, Joey swapped his chef’s whites for a dog training vest and welcomed Rila into his life—an exuberant Malinois. Instantly recognizing his newfound calling, he embarked on a journey that transcended mere hobbyism, evolving into a profound career and passion.
His formal training commenced with enrollment in the rigorous Immersion Program at Michael Ellis School, where he not only gained invaluable knowledge but also acquired his second Malinois. Joey further honed his skills through apprenticeships with seasoned colleagues in the dog training community.
Competing in Mondioring with his dog Elmo, Certified as a Level 1 Mondioring Decoy, and competing in Schutzhund/IGP with his dog Rila, Joey’s dedication to his craft knows no bounds. Yet, amidst his training endeavors and exhilarating hikes, he finds solace in visiting his parents’ senior dogs, relishing the tranquility of a slower-paced life.
JeeHae Choe was born and raised in American Samoa, a tiny island in the South Pacific with a population a little over 45,000. Dogs on the island roamed freely and weren’t allowed indoors, living off wild fowl and human scraps. Jee left her home and joined the Marines 2008, and was honorably discharged in 2012 and went on to college to pursue a major in Clinical Psychology with a Business minor.
Her first job out of the Marines was working at a commercial dog daycare and boarding facility, while juggling a full-time class schedule. She spent two years working as a life skills coach for neurodivergent adult, helping students with learning disabilities gain skills and habits that will allow them to lead successful and independent lives. Jee has a deep passion for the Behavioral Sciences and coaching, and loves that she gets to help dogs and humans build healthy habits that will allow everyone to cohabitate successfully and peacefully within the home.
